"The Power of Privacy"

Customer challenge: Banner Health needed to comply with federally mandated training for the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). As a provider of health related services, Banner Health was required to implement a variety of different training courses for their employees and volunteers. The most current piece of training required under HIPAA pertains to the Federal Privacy Rule. All persons in the health care industry must have completed training on this subject by April 14, 2003.
Course development required the completion of two challenging tasks: 1) creation of an online tracking system 2) development of distinct learning paths.

Solution: "The Power of Privacy" course was launched on March 3, 2003; giving over 21,500 current employees, located in nine states, six weeks to successfully complete the online course. Together, a Senior Instructional Designer and Banner Health's Privacy Officer designed a fun and interactive course that best addressed the needs of each individual end-user, while at the same time fulfilling all federal requirements for the training. Learning objectives were identified for each path (Patient Care, Non-Patient Care, Health Plan, Research) and the course content and final assessments were designed to meet these objectives. Tracking solutions were customized to meet all federal requirements. In addition, their "Power of Privacy" was translated into Spanish, as this is the first language of many Banner employees.
